Ms. Claire Hill made available to me her Paris thesis on Husserl and Frege, and thereby put me under obligation: her thesis succeeded in drawing attention to many overlooked aspects of the subject matter. Many friends have encouraged me to write this book: of these, I must specially mention Jim Edie and Elizabeth Stroker. Gottlob Frege's Grundgesetze der Arithmetik, or Basic Laws of Arithmetic, was intended to be his magnum opus, the book in which he would finally establish his logicist philosophy of arithmetic. But because of the disaster of Russell's Paradox, which undermined Frege's proofs, the more mathematical parts of the book have rarely been read.

Frege’s book, translated in its entirety, begins the present volume. The emergence of two new fields, set theory and foundations of mathematics, on the borders of logic, mathematics, and philosophy, is depicted by the texts that follow. The long-awaited Cambridge Companion to Frege is a compendium of Fregean scholarship that rigorously explores these and similar topics; editors Thomas Ricketts and Michael Potter have compiled a comprehensive collection of fourteen essays that individually provide focused appraisals of a number of Frege's most substantial insights.'.

Jul 13, · Unlike Dummett's book, however, it is far more sensitive to Frege's actual motivations and to the broader historical context. Dummett's book may have dominated discussion of Frege and relevant topics in the philosophy of language and mind for twenty-five years. Burge's book will provide an essential point of reference for the next twenty-five. This book is a thoughtful, provocative and well-written piece of philosophy dedicated to Gottlob Frege's philosophical views concerning language and philosophical logic. Despite its general sounding title, the work does not treat other areas of Frege's philosophical works, such as his philosophy of mathematics.
